Nürburgring-Nordschleife: Abenteuer aktuell

Zimmermann Team Driver about the most demanding track in the world

Wolfgang Weber (54 years) has been a team driver of the Zimmermann Porsche in the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring, which is now called the Nürburgring Endurance Series. The 54-year-old Bavarian has fallen in love with the Nordschleife years ago. He has driven every 24-hour race in the Eifel since 1995. The chassis specialist has completed more than 150 starts in the endurance championship since 2005. During this time he completed more than 3,500 laps on the legendary Nordschleife.
In 2020 Weber will be again part of the driver team in the Zimmermann Porsche at the Nürburgring. Weber: “The Nürburgring-Nordschleife is an ultimate challenge whenever you drive it. Every round is totally different. There are always new requirements. In contrast, the new GP course is just boring. ”The Nordschleife places special demands on the technology. Weber: “There are over 70 curves on the Nordschleife. Each one has its own character. In addition to the 600 m difference in altitude per lap, there are many bumps, compressions and crests. Therefore, a racing car needs more ground clearance and a perfectly tuned damping system. This route is a very special challenge for the brakes: there are parts of the route, especially the downhill part before Breidscheid, where you have to brake the vehicle several times in succession. After that "im Kesselchen" you drive with full throttle upwards for over 20 seconds, with the brakes cooling by up to 500 degrees Celsius. The same thing happens again on the long straight, the Döttinger Höhe with over two kilometers in length. Reliable brake discs and pads are required here, which can brake the vehicle strongly and safely at any temperature. ”
The Zimmermann pilot has three favorite spots on the Nordschleife. Weber: “The Schwedenkreuz is always an experience. You have to hit the crest at the entrance of the left-hand bend, where you cannot see where you are going, in order to get the corner exit perfectly. After that, the only thing left to do is wait and see what the car will do and then complete the section at maximum speed. ”
Weber: The "Pflanzgarten" section 1 is also exciting. You have to do the jump well before the double curve, otherwise I will not get the following curve optimally and you will lose a lot of time. Every round is a new challenge. "
Weber: “The section at "Pflanzgarten" 2 reminds me of numerous rallies. After the car has lost contact with the ground, you first have to catch it in order to then drive through the Bellof-S ideally. If it worked optimally, that goes at full throttle. "
