First pole position did not lead to success

Class win for Zimmermann-Porsche at 2nd NLS round at Nürburgring

The two Zimmermann Porsches, fielded by Mathol Racing, once again took to the grid for the second race of the season in the 2023 NürburgringLangstrecken-Serie (NLS), the 47th DMV 4h Race. The Zimmermann Porsche 911 GT3 Cup did not finish this time, while the Cayman again won the VT3 class. Mathol team boss Matthias Holle: "The team delivered another strong performance at the second NLS round. With the Cup Porsche we were on pole position for the first time. The retirement after a slip on oil can happen. The other car performed as well as expected."

During the morning qualifying session, the entire track was wet in the Eifel region after a rain shower. Conditions improved towards the end of the session, but by then there was significantly more traffic on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

The Zimmermann Porsche 911 GT3 Cup from the "Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring" one-make cup was driven by Arne Hoffmeister, Austrian Reinhard Kofler and Frenchman Dorian Boccolacci. The Frenchman caught the right time window in practice and put the Zimmermann Porsche on pole position in the fiercely contested one-make cup. Before the start, the tire choice turned into a poker game. The track had largely dried out, but the weather forecast predicted further rain. Mathol Racing opted for the safe option, like almost all other class rivals, and sent Boccolacci into the race on rain tires. That was not the right decision. After the second lap, the Zimmermann Porsche pitted for a tire change and then re-established itself in the leading group. The race came to an end on the fifth lap. At the Brünnchen, the Mathol Porsche went off the track on a track of operating fluid. Boccolacci: "Without warning I lost the car." Team boss Holle: "In the fiercely competitive one-make cup, you're walking a fine line. If you want to be successful, you have to drive at the limit. That's what went wrong this time."

Driving the Zimmermann Porsche 718 Cayman S in the VT3 class were Theo Oeverhaus, Argentine Marcos Adolfo Vazquez and Briton Frank Bird. Once again, the Porsche was undisputed in the class. But it was just not enough for victory in the classification group of near-series cars. However, the Mathol trio did manage to set the fastest race lap in the near-series cars on the day. Team boss Holle: "A good performance, but we must finally win the classification group again at the next races."
